CUHK Unveils Mystery of How Brain Learns Motor Skills

目前一些腦科疾病,仍未有有效的治療方法,中文大學醫學院最近成功透過尖端神經生理學技術,拆解動作記憶於大腦內形成的複雜過程,從而解釋高等動物如何學習新的動作技能,結果有助加深認識可造成肢體動作障礙的腦科疾病,如柏金遜症及中風等,以開發更有效的治療。

動作技能是一種刻意運用肌肉執行某種特定行為的功能,如寫字或步行等,在日常生活中不可或缺。每學習一種新動作技能皆需要透過重複練習來掌握,但生物醫學界一直未能了解重複地練習一個動作,如何影響大腦的運動神經系統。

中大醫學院蔡永業腦神經科學中心與生物醫學學院教授容永豪(圖中)和副教授柯亞(圖左1)共同率領的研究,應用尖端神經生理學技術,記錄實驗老鼠在學習新動作技能時,牠們的大腦運動皮質內神經細胞所發出的活動信息。柯亞表示,研究最具挑戰之處是要在實驗老鼠學習動作技能的過程中,準確記錄由多個神經細胞同時發出每分鐘數以千計的神經信號,而記錄的時間為期逾一周。

此外,團隊更成功透過統計學及機器學習技術,處理及分析收集到的海量信息,呈現出記憶於大腦形成的脈絡。腦神經科學中心主要研究員之一、同為研究報告第一作者的中大醫學院內科及藥物治療學系腦神經科臨床講師高浩(圖右1)補充,研究更發現,當大腦運動皮質缺乏神經傳導物質「多巴胺」,運動技能的記憶便難以形成。這情況可見於部分柏金遜症患者,相關的研究發現有助解釋為何此症患者病發後會失去學習動作技能的能力。結果已刊載於國際頂尖科學期刊《Nature Communications》。

研究團隊期望,透過今次研究結果,協助醫學界了解大腦學習動作技能的機理,以幫助運動神經系統失去功能的患者,發展更有效的治療。
